- The Trial of Tim Heidecker is just so great and so hilarious that i had to make a video about it. I started making this video as a sort of play by play through the whole trial, but I ended up wanting to talk more broad strokes so i left in only some of the specifics... so it ended up being a bit of both. Anyways, its more just an excuse to chat about some of my favorite moments and breakdown what i love about it, and what i find interesting. I do hope you enjoy and please consider subscribing!
The Trial of Tim Heidecker is a 4 hour and 48 minute long experimental comedy production set in the world of the web show On Cinema at the Cinema, that was put out by Adult Swim in 2017. - "Full coverage of The Trial of Tim Heidecker in which Tim Heidecker stood accused of 20 counts of 2nd degree felony murder against The Electric Sun 20."

Favorite trial moments?
Gregg struggling not to break while on the stand
So many funny bits. I agree it's one of the funniest things ever made.
Some of my favorites:
When "Empty Bottle" is playing and Tim drums along to it at his table.
Tim's closing statement.
Tim's victory speech.
Tough to say just one, I think for me it’s either Gregg dropping the “hey guys” on the stand, or the falsified letter from Dr San
Manuel’s testimony gets me ever time
Objection. Speculation. Nuff said
What's crazier to me, is that Toni Newman isn't revealed as the hold out juror until the Mister America Documentary (88 minutes). This universe is so interconnected and nebulous and so rewarding to dive into. Nothing tops this level of commitment.
"Objection!"
"Overruled!"
"Thank you, you honor"
Tim is one of the funniest people alive! 😂
Gregg doing his catchphrase "Hey guys!" As he sits down to testify is my favorite part lol
The whole series had led up to this moment
HEY GUYS! ITSSSSS MOVIEEEE TIMEEEE
Let's welcome Joe estevez to the stage
Agreed. That and the reveal of the living Oscar are the best moments in the series.
Rewatched it just a few days ago. I'll never not laugh at Tim objecting to a grieving mother's testimony
He later refers to it as her "sob story".
“Nobody’s coming back” always gets me too
"I want to thank the electric sun 20, wouldn't be here without you"
They're in a special club
He also made it pretty clear that he found her attractive.
Can we please stop rehashing this so called "trial"? Tim was 100% exonerated and it's time to move on. Those kids are in hell and it was their own choice!
They ain’t coming back! (But I wish them well!)
typical timhead, it was a bullshit mistrial and he should be ashamed
electric sun 19!!!
Finally someone brave enough to say it
@@Skokothejoko Farewell
Tim is one of the most underrated actors in modern times. His portrayal of a narcissistic psychopath is so good that it’s genuinely uncomfortable to watch sometimes but never stops being hilarious
His character is like the most vile human being alive, and it's great, and I love him!
Only Tim can make a stand up up special with the literal WORST jokes ever actually hilarious as hell. Now THAT is talent if you ask me. If you haven’t seen it, it is required viewing. Our values are under attack. We gotta support independent entertainment. This country is yours and mine
@@tupaclives5848 It’s the land of the brave and free, after all.
Its easy to act like one when you really are one
@@RaptorsVideos Do you have some experience with the man?
When Gregg is called to the witness stand and says "Hey guys!" that's the funniest thing I have ever seen
When you got trials like Tom Cruise in them, you can’t lose!
To say nothing of TC Jr. RIP.
Tim saying “strike that” after he messes up will always get me
It's honestly amazing that Nicholas Meyer agreed to do this. The whole sequence of Tim discrediting Greg's movie knowledge via what city the Star Trek movies took place in had me dying
respect to him for his sense of.humor
I sometimes wonder exactly how these random celebrities get involved. Like, were they just acquainted with someone involved with the show? Did the show reach out to them? Are they just fans and reached out because they wanted to be involved?
I always figured, with Awesome Show at least, that the comedian guests were just happy to get on a show that allowed themselves to be extra goofy. It's like the ultimate creative freedom.
He's so pithy it's amazing
I love that Gregg said he'd seen a lot of medical movies, like "Panic in Needle Park".. that's a movie where Pacino plays a homeless heroin addict. It's not a medical drama. Love the running joke that Gregg doesn't know shit about movies.
You could technically qualify it was a medical movie in a roundabout way.
Gregg loves the concept of movies lol
Him trying to “kill a fly” everytime he got frustrated, had me in stitches 😂
No joke, this actually was my introduction to On Cinema. Watched all 5 days, and was delighted to find that the lore presented in the trial was an actual show. I've been a Gregghead ever since.
Me too. It felt like the best introduction to the show because so many layers are pulled back when you then watch the oscar specials and then the weekly episodes
I understand calling it inaccessible, but the trial (not the highlights vids) was my introduction to the On Cinema universe. I assumed it was some weird Adult Swim thing (ala The Broom Shakalaka) and found it absolutely hysterical. Yeah, of course, when I revisited it after consuming all of the show, it was definitely a more enriching experience, but the surface level aspect shouldn't be undersold. It really is that funny.
oh i completely agree, i think its the most common late-entry point to on cinema for that very reason, its so funny on its own and it does a great job of filling you in on what you need to know
@@AdmiralGorgg Plz make more of these. I claw at you. Also I was drunk when initially commenting. I watched the whole video and you addressed everything I said. Good job.
Same for me as well! I actually thought it was real at first because it was also my first introduction to this kind of reality-based comedy(?), you can imagine my relief when I started going through comments and realized it was all acting. But honestly I loved the fact that it fooled me and felt real to me, and it led to me discovering On Cinema and my favorite, very niche, genre of comedy.
"I claw at you" what? Man, you talk weird as fuck @@razzledazzle1462
I think they call it inaccessible because it's so long that it's a big ask of someone without investment to watch it rather than the content of the trial itself.
Funny story: I watched the entire trial last year for the first time, i laughed so much, every reaction from Tim was so insane and i tried to imagine what would be like if this was real, i rewatched it a second time, and probably RUclips algoritm tought i was into murder trials and court situations, so it recommended me videos of the Darrel Brooks trial, a piece of S... That took and SUV through a Christmas Parade in Wisconsin, and i swear i thought it was some sort of very elaborate sequel, so much of what Tim does, the way he reacts and the things he says is what Darrel Brooks did, from representing himself, object to nonsense, angry outbursts, stupid arguments, irrelevant questions to victims or family of them, its like insane, i recommend anyone to watch that thing.
So I'm not the only one who saw the similarities! The only difference is Brooks didn't have a "Toni" to cheat the system and get him out.
I got my friend to watch it by telling her it was a real trial, and asking what she thought of this Tim Heidecker guy (she is a fan of real life trial coverage). By the time she figured out it wasn’t a real trial she was hooked on the absurdity of it all and ended up watching the whole thing.
The Trial was my intro to the universe and it worked brilliantly.
Please make this an on cinema channel 🎉
Please... we're asking nicely.
FR! There's not enough OnCinima content.
A real 5 Bagger of an idea right there
It's (nearly) comedic perfection. I must admit I'm fairly new to it. Cannot get enough. Luckily, the few episodes out there are a billion hours long.
Happy, too, the RUclipsr mentioned the aspects of Always Sunny. Being that Tim grew up and went to college in the Philadelphia area, I wonder if it had an effect. Not that one needs to be from Philly to appreciate IASIP. But when watching the Oscars episode(s), On Cinema really does feel like Always Sunny's stepson.
YES
The On Cinema cinematic universe is such an amazing, hilarious, and bizarre experience. I love it, yet I'm not sure how I could ever convince any given one of my friends to give it all an honest chance and watch through to the point where you reach the trial and understand all the backstory that has led to this.
I saw the Grammy special one year while it was live, high as fuck, not knowing what I was watching. It was the one where Greg was dressed as the joker and every moment of it absolutely SLAYED me. I had to have rewatched that video like 2 times a year by now, but when I found out there was a whole connecting storyline I went absolutely nuts. It's truly amazing comedy and I want more people to get into it because it's definitely worth it to invest a bit of time lol.
I tried to show my friends the light and they are always interested and think what i tell them is funny but its alot to get into
@@2doot Same! only difference is I was not high.
These videos on the genius of On Cinema universe speak to my soul. The level of brilliance that is overlooked by everyone I know is mind blowing. Feels good to not be alone.
I'm so glad to be able to watch a breakdown of this comedy gold! Just knowing someone else "gets" this, is reaffirming that I'm not insane for thinking this is one of the funniest things I've ever seen. Tim (and Eric, as well) are the masters of dry and absurd comedy. The universe of OCATC could only be created by extremely talented people. Goodness, the whole "MoneyZap" arc tickles me to no end!
so glad you got something out of it! youre definitely not insane lol, and if you are, i certainly am too
The courtroom’s reaction to listening to Empty Bottle 2.0 made me cry laughing
The hairstyles alone make it worth the watch
I totally lost it when I first watched Gregg eating popcorn at the trial. It was the most subtle joke but genius comedy. I also remember watching it thinking i will watch only some of the trial to end up watching the whole thing.
the sheer planning it must have taken to pre think the arc and to jmp on new stories as they come up to make this decade long surreal comedy/drama play out is sublime,
Seriously…
One of my favorite pieces of comedy out there. If you haven’t already watched it, he also does an amazing 1-hour long Joe Rogan pod parody that hits the nail on the head.
Thanks!
Hey your honor thanks for doing this
His 12 hour podcast parody is another gem
If you're trying to go to sleep, and you don't need visuals, you won't be able to sleep unless you sleep by constantly laughing.
Line delivery at 29:26 is perfect. Such sincere sadness that's almost just as much an admission on her part. Toni was such a good addition.
Tim objecting to literally everything except all the evidence that actually hurts him...perfect
This is the greatest comedy series on RUclips. Some of the funniest things I've seen. The genius of this is mind blowing. The trial and the subsequent movie where he runs for DA, is absolutely amazing. A shame it's not on RUclips anymore
I've watched (well, mostly listened to in the background) the full trial probably 6 times. It's packed full of amazing details. The term "genius" is overused, but Tim deserves it.
On Cinema is the greatest comedy universe. All the cast are sooooo good at playing their characters
YES.. its brilliant beyond words for me, so happy someone explained it like i couldnt
thank you for these videos
Glad you like them!
I love Tim Heidecker's comedy so much. All of it. I've watched a lot of On Cinema and Decker in the past. Eventually I fell off and seeing all of this gives me a weird schadenfreude. I want to catch up but there's SO MUCH. It's daunting. Gonna have to do it though.
You gotta. Just start up watching on cinema again and whenever they talk about something else that inspires you to watch it, go with that 🤘🏻
@@AdmiralGorgg lol you're right. I've started watching it now. I'm in for the long haul!
Tim's commitment to a comedic idea, no matter how long it takes to unfold, is unparalleled.
But have you seen House of Cards? Incredible film.
The greatest video. Gets funnier every time
My introduction was the channel “Attorney Tom” reacting to the trial. I think having a real personal injury attorney reacting to this was amazingly good and highly recommend
Tim's comedy is like a long stack of rugs being pulled out from under you. You think the joke is over but it just keeps going and going.
I just got done watching the first documentary you put out. Now I am watching this one, love how it’s so well done keep up the good work.
Wow awesome! Thank you!
I am a lifelong diehard Star Trek fan, and the whole reason I discovered On Cinema was because of a random youtube compilation video of Tim and Gregg arguing about Star Trek II/IV. So when I eventually saw Nicholas Meyer actually show up during Tim's trial, I absolutely lost it. Probably one of the greatest comedy pay-offs of all time.
Another great video! Can't wait to see what you do next!!!
Annnd he’s back! Thank you sir!
no, thank YOU for watching
My thoughts exactly. The trial and the on cinema universe is a landmark achievement in comedy. It's historic. It's unique. It's a decade of sheer genius.
On Cinema is one of my favorite series ever
The reveal after 9 seasons that "Empty Bottle" is just an old Axiom song that's been made considerably worse is maybe my favorite moment from the whole series. Gregg's face alone while Qui Con Me is playing and Maryam and the other court attendees bopping their head. Then the contrast where everyone's disinterested except Tim and Gregg holding his head in his hand. I was cracking up for the full duration of both songs. Rossetti the Rat also has impeccable performance for the whole bit
The “no, that would be a hindrance” is such a perfect line. There’s no need for elaboration because the logic is almost psychotically distant from what makes an expert.
at times when im bookkeeping or doing mundane tasks during the workday I listen to the 5 hour trail :P
The Trial was my introduction to On Cinema as well. I had looked into Mark Prush's work after seeing him in Better Call Saul, and came across some video of him sitting in a courtroom in front of a flag. I was like "wtf, this guy has drama going on??" So I started watching and yeah, it took a while for me to realize it was a bit, from some thing called On Cinema. I explored further....and down the rabbit hole I went. Now I adore the whole OC universe although I have yet to meet one single person in the wild who has heard of it. 😅
Loving these video essays regarding On Cinema, keep up the great work dude ❤
Thanks a ton!
The Trial got about a million times better after I went to law school and found out just how ridiculously accurate the trial is. If I were to teach someone the process of an actual trial, I'd show them this. It's pretty close to 100% accurate in terms of courtroom procedure and evidentiary laws, and even the judge giving Tim greater leeway since he's defending himself is accurate.
i love your breakdowns of Heidecker.
TBH I was there when The Trial as being relased. I didn't get it at the time but I really appreacite you watching this on my behalf.
Totally agree. Best piece of comedic art we have today
Yes!
Great video! The Trial was my first introduction to On Cinema. It always makes me wonder what could've been if that coward Dr. San didn't hang himself in his cell.
I got a message for the parents: Nobody's comin back!
The guy in the multi-colored striped shirt at 31:39 seemed to have the most difficult time hiding his smile over the duration.
you’re killing it man, these past videos are awesome
This is a great video, and I'm so glad people are still making these kinds of videos!
Should i watch the trial tonight? aarRGHHH!!!
Your deep dives are so awesome. Huge fan. These videos obviously take a lot of time and care but I wish one came out daily. I would gladly give you 1k of my HEI points. I’m still waiting to get rich off the points in 2021 like Tim promised but who knows, could hit the Amato Lotto.
Each ticket has a 1/10737418240000000000 chance of winner so you gotta buy ALOT of tickets to win. Id say those odds are really good so buy buy buy! To the moon! 🌙
Wow thank you! More to come! Haha they take a while so can’t promise daily but trying my best for every two weeks!
Dude i still have HEI points stashed away continue to HODL!
My favorite part of the trial is clicking new comments and reading all of the posts from outraged people who don't get what they're watching 🤭
I subscribed because we NEED more on cinema talk! Set up a rewatch stream!!!
my thoughts exactly haha im tryin! thanks for the sub!
I watched it all as it came out, from the first episode of on cinema, i love tim and eric. As soon as he introduced Dr. San i knew trouble was on the horizon, then he started vaping, it was awesome to witness it all as it unfolded, adult swim is awesome for this
these videos are fantastic omg. I LOVE IT
One of the greatest comedy things ever. But you'll need to put in 50 hours work before watching it. Good luck!
so i glad i came by this channel
Hey I’m glad you came by it too
I just saw this for the first time last week, holy shit 😂 Absolutely brilliant
I love Tim's stuff. I can rewatch it and laugh again and again. Crazy. But I appreciate it.
this is literally perfect, Tim is a genius
I really like this approach. Dissecting this absurd tradegy/comedy with a methodical, serious analysis of character and themes. It has really increased my appreciation for the depths of OCATC.
Good work.
My absolute fave moment is when he comes in the next day without his lawyer and he points out the kid he remembers and how he told Tim, no matter what, he wants everyone to know he did nothing wrong. The acting from tim there is played so straight it is absolutely ridiculous 😂
Hahahaha, watching the 4 hour trial without any prior knowledge from a RUclips recommendation "like some kind of crazy person." That'd be me.
“Your son is in hell, Delgado! That was his choice!” 😂🤣😂
On cinema is the best. Don't know how there can ever be anything like it again. Lucky to have experienced it all unfold
Giving this channel 5 bags yo.
Axiom's song had me in tears lol
I just wanted to come here and state the trial is where I started stalking Tim Heidecker, and this video in particular made me want to start this archiving channel
“Gorgg” is a little too close to “Gregg” for this Tim head to be able to accept this as an unbiased analysis.
Fantastic summary and totally agree. It's groundbreaking in a way that's quite hard to describe.
I'm only halfway through so you might mention this later in the video but the only thing that takes me out due to its absurdity is the 'hand transplant' section. Everything else is entirely believable....just about.
I also didn't know lots of it was improvised.
Whats craziest about this is ive downloaded this video on premium and rewatched it more than the actual trial footage your standards for video essays is impressive. Dont hold back
Man this is a well made video. Got me as a sub, great work
Much appreciated!
The real tragedy is the loss of Dr. San.
I'm Irish, so I'd never really heard of On Cinema. Then 3 years or so ago, I stumbled on The Trial, thinking it was real for a few minutes, then realising the genius comedy that it was. It was genuinely hilarious, and I didn't even know the characters. I've since become a big fan of On Cinema and appreciate The Trial even more. Approach the bench?
I'm a big fan of Unfiction/ARG's and have been for some time. I feel like On Cinema At The Cinema goes completely unacknowledged as a fantastic work of Unfiction and can be argued to be in this same category. Multimedia, multi-faceted storytelling, active in character interactions with viewers through social media that often influence major plot points in the show, and an emphasis on creating a storytelling universe that is subversive to the point where it does feel like you are witnessing real people, and their real lives in this ongoing narrative. I think the only reason people might disagree with this is because 1) the creators probably have no clue what an ARG is, and 2) it doesn't play into a lot of the common troupes seen in ARG's like solvable puzzles, nor does it fit in the horror genre which many weirdly believe is needed to be considered one. Which is a really limiting notion imo. I think drifting away into other genres of storytelling with this type of narrative is actually kind of groundbreaking. I would love to see other people's thoughts on this idea, because it has been stuck in my mind ever since I got sucked into this several months ago.
Im gonna give this video 5 bags of popcorn, a soda, and an out of court settlement of an undisclosed amount to the grieving mother Tim objected to in court.
I've been waiting so many years for a breakdown like this, the trial is one of my all-time favorite comedic performances and you really hit the spot with this one.
Regarding improv, one thing that I have always wondered is how many rehearsals they did before filming the actual trial. I know from the Oscer Specials there's only one rehearsal.
Found this from Tim just posting it, you made it to the big leagues!
That is so awesome
The On Cinema / Decker universe isn't just a hilarious comedy, it is a masterpiece of multi-media preformance art unfolding over more than a decade.
I could not be more greatful that i got to exist a time and place that allowed me to wintness it all unfold.
I still remember stumbling across the trial on RUclips and it being my intro to OCatC. I dropped the trial to go back and get context then started over and just was more and more amazed at this completely nuanced universe I had entered. Its still my favorite collection of comedic performance/content ever. "I'll fuck you up Mark!"
Another great video mate, and I too was one of those who got introduced to OcatC via the trial! I had seen Tim & Eric though so realised pretty quickly I was missing something - so started from Ep1 at that point and haven't regretted a moment since!
I agree with your final statement as well :D
thanks! yeah its interesting to see how many people get in at the trial. Its so good, and it makes sense cause it kinda compiles a lot of the show for you and peaks your curiosity
He has an 11hr spoof of J Rogan but it’s looped at some point but you can’t tell.
yes! it's hilarious... big believer in "crab salts"
This is so good. Well done! I need to rewatch this whole thing now. So cool to see Tim share the video. Congrats!
Thanks so much! And I know thats so awesome he did that, I couldn’t believe it!
Wait, the actors who played the judge and attorneys are real life lawyers? They really did go the extra mile.
I think Tim's lawyer was a real lawyer turned actor, everyone else actors
With Trial videos becoming popular, I just wait for this to hit the culture at large
Another six bagger! PLEASE keep making more of these
It was these clips that made me discover Tim (and Eric). The clips were so genius I had to watch the whole trial... then everything Tim (and Eric) have done including the shows, the movie, etc.
It was a stroke of genius to have actual lawyers portray the lawyers. Actors, even high caliber ones, would have done what they "thought" a lawyer would say/do in that moment. There would be times where the realism and grounding would be lost.
The judge and the two prosecuters absolutely make this special what it is.
“I have the constitutional right to strike him if he disobeys me, and right now he’s still under my supervision, he still technically works for me”
I don’t know why you found this funny. It was a travesty of justice and Tim once again got off scot free after being responsible for yet more deaths. If he’d stuck to the movies like Gregg rather than feeding his ego with all of his crazy schemes none of this would have ever happened.
