- Sir Richard Hadlee, New Zealand’s highest wicket-taker, has transformed his country’s cricket over the last twenty years. In 86 Test matches he inspired New Zealand to unprecedented success. An experienced fielder and hard-hitting left-handed batsman, he is also on of the great bowlers of any era or nationality. As one of five cricket-playing sons of a former New Zealand captain, his list of achievements is remarkable:
He first played for Canterbury in 1971 aged 20, forming an effective new ball partnership with his elder brother Dayle. He made his debut for New Zealand in 1973.
In 1978 he began his ten successful seasons with Nottinghamshire, climaxing in 1987 with the winning of the Britannic Assurance Championship and the Nat West trophy.
In 1984 Hadlee became the first player since 1967 to achieve the double of 100 wickets and 1,000 runs in an English season.
He was the first bowler to take 400 Test wickets (at an average of five wickets per Test), to add to over 3000 Test runs.
He took 10 wickets in a Test on nine occasions, and five wickets in an innings 36 times. His highest Test score was 151 not out against Sri Lanka in 1987.
He achieved his best bowling figures of 9-52 (catching the tenth wicket as well), to help New Zealand beat Australia in an away series for the first time. Hadlee took 33 wickets in the three Test series.
In 1990, he became the first cricketer to be knighted while still playing.
This video contains highlights from the career of one of cricket’s greatest all-rounders, including an interview with Richie Benaud.
Hadlee had probably the most beautiful bowling action ever. It was so fluid and smooth.
Yea. Him, Ambrose and Holding for sure.
No 1 Action -- Maikel Holding
2 - Hadlee
3 - Akhtar
Holding - Artistic
Hadlee - Technically best
And Akhtar - full of Aggression and Bravery.
@@RakeshMisra-oc2tj Hadlee looked better than Holding.
@@RakeshMisra-oc2tj Hadlee had a much more beautiful action than Holding, Holding's action was more tense and looked to muscle it through, not as elegant and fluid as Hadlee.
@@aaronbarlow4376 It's your opinion. But according to many great Cricketers (including Boycott, and your Hadlee too) and Cricket experts - Maikel Holding is the all-time greatest ARTIST of Fast Bowling.
Even Sir Don Bradman was a great fan of his Matchless Action.
Hadlee was & is my best Hero Cricketer.
Born in the early 70s . 1980s cricket was the best in my life time as to date .
What a gentleman.
Beautifully spoken, quietly confident, even tempered.
A masterful bowling action and all those backfoot cuts and drives.
Richard Hadlee is an all-time Great Fast Bowler (and All-Rounder) that could have easily found a place in any World X1. Miss those days !!
Nobody comes close to Hadlee. The greatest of all time.
Kapil dev was a better batsmen.so was imran khan. But yes a precursor to kiwi allrounders like chris cairns..
His mental game was second to none. Brought up the rest of the team. As a Kiwi I will admit that his stats were padded by a lack of great talent with the ball in the rest of the team but he would have been the best bowler in almost any team at any time
@@exmachinz ...certainly..beautiful bowler...a real artisan with the ball...movement..change of pace..seam and swing...and really intelligent in his bowling adaptability.....AND...a fine batsman...class act for the history books.cheers from Australia.
Hm well he was unquestionably an all time great bowler. I’m not convinced about his status as a great all rounder. A couple of extra hundreds and an average over 30 would have helped. Imran K, Kapil Dev and Both most definitely.
Well as a Kiwi, Sir Richard was right up there but he did say he was inspired by Denis Lillee. Imran, Kapil and the Windies were all fantastic bowlers in my mind. Richard was a great bowler because he had hands that could run down the seam and hit the seam 6/6 of six. This made him great because of the late movement. Kapil and Imran were more swing bowlers and the Windoes bowlers as we all know were speed merchants so it is like comparing apples with oranges and pears really. they were all fantastic cricketers in their own right.
King Hadlee destroys Australia with 33 wickets in 3 tests in 1985 -- 86...
This series should be called the " WICKET LINE SERIES " ( vis a vis the " BODY LINE SERIES " of 1932 )
The most devastating spell of Accurate Fast bowling with Line & Length , Swing & Seam ...AMAZING..
Hadlee's bowling average playing in Australia against them was 17.56 saw other day.
I used to really like New Zealand touring over here to see Hadlee bowl. The number of play and misses was ridiculous. You'll see poor old Chris Smith on here getting a killer bouncer at Lords which balloons up to be caught. Hadlee had had two appeals in succession turned down & then put the best bouncer I've ever seen on Smith. What a great bowler in a really good NZ side.
One of the most swiftest actions I have ever seen, I saw him 1988 in India in a Test when he broke the 400 Test wickets mark.
No you didn't. In India in 1988 you may have seen Hadlee take Botham's world record for test wickets, but he didn't take his 400th wicket until 1990 at Lancaster Park in Christchurch.
Proud Kannadiga. Kannada power.
Maybe the most efficient bowling action ever. Wasted nothing and was a threat in all conditions.
very good cricketer. and very humble
I love how his replies and stories have the undertone of the ebbs and flow of Cricket in general
Most of his wickets were genuine fast bowling with great swing, nothing to break bones or injure batsmen and he got over 400 wickets
As a kid growing up in NZ. Hadlee was NZ cricket, even in one dayers on flat pitches the captain would conserve Hadlees available overs to break partnerships later in the innings and more often than not he'd break partnerships.
He's easily NZs greatest cricketer with Martin Crowe NZs greatest batsman.
Fantastic bowler. One of the very best.
Sir Richard hadlee great bowling action &those was the year a golden year
As an Australian I hated him because he was so good, what an action.
Aside from his obvious skill, it was his cricket 'brain' that was one of his greatest talents. He out thought most of his opponents.
I think his record indicates he is the best fast bowler ever to date. His average, strike rate 36 5 wkts 9 10 wkts no fast bowler really comes close. He bowled against ALL THE GOOD TEAMS ALL THE TIME....really great player no one ever mentions him when speaking of the great bowlers I have no idea why ? He has the best record by far ?
I agree. The best ever. The other big factor as to why he's the best is that he pretty much did it alone. Not much support at the other end. Lillee had Tommo. McGrath had Warne. Akram had Waqar. The West Indians had each other. Not Hadlee. He did it in a pretty average team. Extraordinary.
@@andrewbaverstock2672Huge factor... I always had him as one of the greats but never thought about it like you have put it but what you have said is quite pertinent and relevant and would catapult him into any world eleven..
...there can only be one reason..Hadley was not a genuine express pace bowler...like ( pick a bowler)...his stock bowling was medium-fast..with subsequent ball wizardry and accuracy..pristine....He ..could bowl at express pace but only for a ball or two...as a specific tactic for whatever he had in mind for a specific batsman....I think he realised that although he could bowl..150 km,etc....he liked cutting and seaming the ball so much..and was successful with it...that he’d rather, bowl within himself a yard or two..and let his ball artistry have the slower pace to work and get wickets....I could be wrong.Cheers from Australia.
@@cosmicman621 no you're not wrong at all. A far more complete bowler by comparison with so many other 'great' fast bowlers. Also his approach enabled him to last so long when NZ played less test cricket than the other top teams. He was an absolute giant, and the reason he is under-mentioned, (though not never) is simply because he was from New Zealand, who being of small population and down at the bottom of the world geographically, and a weaker side when not at their strongest with a core group of talented and experienced players, are easy for the cricket commentators and writers/critics etc, to forget about/ignore.
He's a legend here in NZ. Our greatest cricketer.
Sir Richard Hadley was an all time hero.
No.1 fast bowler in all time crickiet history
Kapil dev imran khan and the west Indian bowlers...?..
@@arijitsinha6485 not even close

One of the finest exponents of fast bowling - same league as Akram - similarities in whippy action but a different story in swing
Greatest fast bowler ever.
Maybe not the best all rounder, but the best bowler out of imran and botham
@@lucadennett7656 He was handy with the bat too.
@@aaronbarlow4376
Although he was a talented batsman & could have performed better he didn't took batting seriously.
If he had only applied his mind he would have had a better batting record too.
@@adsdynamic9219 How did he not 'apply his mind'?
Beautiful and Accurate Bowling Brother Hadlee
Hadlee best bowler of all times
My bowling idol growing up as a Notts fan. Great to see his early days as an out an out quick bowler, surprisingly fast. And to think how he had to change is style an then became even better. Loved his comment regarding getting himself and his team mates to better there opposite numbers performance individually. Brilliant advice for any team regardless of sport.
Nottinghamshire straightened Sir Richard out. Put him on a diet (prior to him playing County Cricket for Notts he was a chippies and Coke man) eating the right food, rest and really looked after him. Full credit to Nottinghamshire for bringing out the best in him. He got on well with Clive Rice - a very good Notts Captain and cricketer
I wish I could upvote this more than once
Happy 70th legend! 🙏👍🏆
Sir Don Bradman said no bowler he'd seen had better control of seam or swing. Coming from the world's greatest batsman and selector, that means a lot.
natwest final 1987, where's the crowd ? lord was half empty. great career though, 431 wickets in test cricket speaks for itself.my favourite fast bowler of all time.
Regrettably test cricket no longer holds the allure that it once did. It’s now the smash and bash white ball cricket, and lifeless pitches that favour batsman. Seeing RichardHadlee bowling to 5 or 6 slips is a sight to behold - doesn’t happen these days.
God of Fast Bowling
Sir Hadlee 🙏👍
Finest fast bowler ever
Great all rounder
Very Good Bowler
I like bowling Action
I feel like I am with Richard Hadley sir
If there's a heaven, I want Ritchie commentating
What a legend

"Well yes.
One, an Australian.
Denise Lillee, I have a great deal of admiration for her".
xD
THAT action !! add to that he was the only bowler NZ really had at the time !! the fact he got so many wickets is amazing
In fairness NZ had three or four bowlers who although would never have got anywhere near a squad of the best 20 bowlers of the 80s were good enough to trouble decent batting sides when conditions suited them. The likes of Cairns, Chatfield and Bracewell
@@dlamiss true but if you have just one bowler to defend against its a lot easier for the batsman and harder for Hadlee to get wickets
@@familyplans3788 true enough yes
I must admit, i didnt like when Hadlee chose the short run up. I just wanted him go all out. However, he gained more wickets off the short. My favourite cricketer of all time.
@@familyplans3788 Chatfield and Cairns were perfect for Hadlee. Chatfield never gave away easy runs (he was nicknamed metronome for his consistiency), while carins bowled massive in-swingers.
The best bowler richard
magician of swing
May be Imran khan, Kapil Dev and Ian Botam equal grade but Sir Richard Hadley is more superior than anyone else simply I love ❤️ his bowling it's really very big
The key is bowling close to the stumps and moving the bowl both ways that was his hall mark.
Possibly 2nd behind Garfield Sobers as the best all rounder ever
Got the feeling that there was no love lost between Phil Edmonds and Hadlee. Hadlee seemed to go up a gear whenever Edmonds was batting. Edmond's once famously asked him to remove his sweatbands as they were distracting him, apparently. Not a good move. Edmonds, a fairly accomplished writer and student of the game, and a bit of a piss taker put together a book about great bowlers - one hundred of them to be precise. Hadlee is in there, of course, he could hardly keep him out, but the entry, for those who can read between the lines, damns with faint praise. The intimation is that he was dependent on green tops, he was, to use his words, mechanical, somewhat self-obsessed, and not quite in the class of Lillee or Marshall. The last bit is debatable, but on figures alone, he comparable, if not better, than any player in history. As to not being a tea man, bullshit. Even at a simple level, it makes sense the better he plays the more likely the team is to win. With one exception, a famous game in Melbourne, every time he took a ten for NZ won the game.
Hamish I think the comment that he wasn't a team man was made based on the car incident in 1985 where he wanted to keep the car and give it to his (now ex) wife Karen and it caused an issue between Coney (and others) and him. It is a strange comment to make as he certainly gave his all for Nottinghamshire, Canterbury and New Zealand
I was on a couple of cricket holidays in the late 1980s with former England cricketers Bob Willis and Bob Taylor along with x BBC journalist Pat Murphy and spent a lot of time in their company especially on the second trip and i listened to Bob Willis telling his tales of cricketers he played with and Against and I remember he spoke very fondly of many cricketers but for some reason had little time for Hadlee.
Video quality is very poor because Australian never wanted New Zealand to over win Because Australian always kept New Zealand as their last or least youngest brother
England’s Andy Caddick had a very similar action
well observed; I subconsciously always knew that but you spelled it out bro :)
@@chemistryset1 yes and Caddick could've/should've played for New Zealand as well, being born in Christchurch.

Sir post is given by English not blindly so Richard Hadley is all time best fast bowler
Hard to see any fast bowlers or even medium pace bowlers play till age of 39 granted more variations of cricket these days but credit def due
How many wickets would he have got if NZ played 5 test series?
Sadly nz don't play alot of tests. I read that in nz only test series win in aus. Sir richard hadlee took 33 wickets in 3 matches the next highest wicket taker chatfield took 7 wickets I think. nz greatest cricketer and had impact.
660
Imagine if he'd played 150 tests like most guys do in the present era instead of 86.
Why he not played 1992 w.cup?
Woulda been 40? Probably woulda still cut it though.
As Richie said at the start of the video, we had 4 great all rounders in the late 70’s and 80’s. Botham, Imran, Dev and Hadlee. Botham was my cricket hero when I was growing up but I liked watching all 4 of them. Botham was probably the best in my opinion but I’m biased!! They’re all greats of the game and stand up there with the best players of all time.
i love Aggers but miss BrIan Johnstone, Jim Laker & Ritchie Benault
Because of Australian just wanted to keep him under their control otherwise he would be more devastating bowler.
He not number one fast bowler just like an idiot but very intelligent bowler I have seen ever before
Back in thy days when smoking was good for you 🤪🤪🤪
Ian Bothan is a better allrounder than Richard Hadlee.

I will ask you a modest question...... IT IS GOING TO BE TERSE....Why all these lilillies..hadlees ond thompsons and others did not come to INDIA and value what they are worth for.......
Hadlee came to India in 1988 and took 18 wickets in 3 test matches including two 5 wickets in an innings and one 10 wickets in a match..on dead Indian pitches only favouring batsmen and spinners... Hadlee was 37 years old at that time..... What else you expect
