Anglo-American

Hi. Not adverse to a dab, however the first item does not point to a particular subject, rather it is more of a definition than a link to an article on that subject. Therefore there is currently only one valid target. Onel5969 TT me 11:56, 11 January 2025 (UTC)

@Onel5969 I am not sure if this is against policy? There is also Anglo American plc. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 13:35, 11 January 2025 (UTC)
Hi. I'm pretty sure it is. One of the 3 aspects of a dab page is "Ensuring that a reader who searches for a topic using a particular term can get to the information on that topic quickly and easily, whichever of the possible topics it might be." The first item on the dab page was little more than a definition, and definitely didn't link to get the reader to a particular topic. In addition, each bullet on a dab should only have a single blue link. Also, I'm not quite sure what you intended to refer to in that first definition. Did you mean inhabitants of those 5 countries? Those 5 countries as a group? Or that each of those countries might also be referred to by that term? Finally, re: the plc, that can be handled by a hatnote, since the demographic is clearly the primary target. Onel5969 TT me 18:59, 11 January 2025 (UTC)
@Onel5969 The point is that Anglo-American refers, primarily, to "both Britain and the US."; the redirect to Anglo-Americans is misleading. This is also true for many links pointing to it. Anyway, I fortunately found a proper single article to use in the disambig (Anglosphere). Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 02:19, 12 January 2025 (UTC)
Should this be merged with Anglo American disambig? Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 02:22, 12 January 2025 (UTC)
Sounds good. I made a slight tweak, since each entry should only have 1 blue link. Let me know what you think. And regarding the merge, yes, probably, that would simplify searches. Onel5969 TT me 10:53, 12 January 2025 (UTC)
@Onel5969 Could you do the merge? I also think that the Anglo-American Publishing does not belong there per WP:PARTIAL (but the plc is ok, since it is sometimes referred to without the plc). Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 00:44, 13 January 2025 (UTC)
Done. I added the publishing house, for while I understand your point about PARTIAL, I also think that someone searching for the publishing house might only put in the first two words. Onel5969 TT me 01:57, 13 January 2025 (UTC)
@Onel5969 Fair, but consider we have a bunch of other stuff like Anglo-American School of Moscow, Anglo-American loan and quite a few others I see from the search... Oh, we should probably redirect Anglo-american to the disambig too? Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 03:00, 13 January 2025 (UTC)
I see your point now. In light of that, I'll remove the publishing house, and yes, Anglo-american should also point to the dab. I'll take care of it. Onel5969 TT me 10:48, 13 January 2025 (UTC)

Polish language help

Hi Piotrus,

I wrote an article on the ToNiePokój escape room fire, and am doing some research for information to expand it. My Polish is not very good yet, and the passage "Prokurator zwróciła także uwagę na opinię biegłych, według których budynek był w złym stanie technicznym. - Nie było tam stałego źródła ogrzewania, a o wynajmie zadecydowała niska cena czynszu - dodała. W mowie końcowej wypunktowano także zlekceważenie obowiązku wprowadzenia stałego ogrzewania do lokalu usługowego i instrukcji obsługi tych urządzeń. - Piecyki gazowe, mające ogrzewać lokal, umieszczono w pomieszczeniach pozbawionych wentylacji i zawierających materiały łatwopalne - podkreśliła prokurator Sielska." (from [1]) is confusing me and Google translate is coming up with gibberish. If it is not too much trouble, would you mind giving me the gist of the passage? Thank you for any help you can provide. All the best, Grumpylawnchair (talk) 16:53, 14 January 2025 (UTC)

@Grumpylawnchair Sure. Here's my corrected Google Translate: The prosecutor also drew attention to the experts opinion, according to which the building was in poor technical condition. - There was no permanent source of heating there, and the low rent was the deciding factor in renting it - she added. The final speech also highlighted the neglect of the obligation to introduce permanent heating to the service premises and the [the neglect of the obligation to follow the] instructions for using these devices. - Gas heaters, which were supposed to heat the premises, were placed in rooms without ventilation and containing flammable materials - emphasized prosecutor Sielsak
Overall, GT did a good job; it changed experts to expert. I an not sure what else could be confusing, but I clarified one part that might be unclear in the original? Is there anything else you'd like to ask about this passage? Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 03:55, 15 January 2025 (UTC)
No, thank you. I realised that I had used Firefox's local translate instead of Google Translate, and that's what caused the gibberish. I still have issues in understanding more formal Polish sometimes, since I learn as a hobby, and I guess that the conjugation confused me. Ten no Hate Made – Poland Hishi

hello! i read through your GA review of ten no hate made. i don't mind assisting with some of the japanese, but i'm going in relatively blind, having only read versailles, claudine, and oniisama e... i'm a little pre-occupied right now, but if you can point me in the direction for what you need or give me some sources to work from, i'd be happy to help any way i can! Plifal (talk) 13:19, 16 January 2025 (UTC)

@Plifal Much appreciated. I don't know if there are any academic works mentioning this in Japanese, but I'd expect there should be at least some reviews or such? I'd be very curious if there was any commentary by Japanese reviewers on the choice of subject matter (Polish history), which is very rare in Japan, but I'll settle for just learning what the reviewers said (assuming any can be found). Versailles is pretty famous, so I'd think someone would notice that spin off... Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 13:48, 16 January 2025 (UTC)
no worries! a cursory google search returned mostly book shops, but i'll see if i can dig for anything more.--Plifal (talk) 15:03, 16 January 2025 (UTC)
@Plifal Based on my experience with Polish sources, a lot will be non-digitized (particularly considering the age of this). For Polish sources, I often stumble upon mentions of old reviews and such through google book snippets - then I ask a colleague in Poland to go the library and scan stuff for me. Not sure how that will work for Japanese language sources. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 01:55, 17 January 2025 (UTC)
ok understood, i'll do the same. i might be able to find something in the otaku district here too. i'll do my best!--Plifal (talk) 04:01, 17 January 2025 (UTC)
@Plifal Thanks. I am curious to find what sources, if any exist. I'd assume there would be outlets in Japan that would publish reviews of manga; if not academic (ex. Polish equivalent would be Nowe Książki) then presumably in otaku manga magazines and fanzines, which I'd expect to be pretty popular in Japan. Category:Literary magazines published in Japan has many options, and there is also Category:Manga magazines published in Japan, some of which could publish reviews. The big issues is how digitized they are, given that most editions were published in the 1990s. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 06:47, 17 January 2025 (UTC)
@Plifal A collegue send me a lists of potential reviews found by an AI, although (1) I am not sure if they are reliable and (2) they probably are not the old reviews, but some new ones?

Ten no Hate Made

hi! just getting back to you on the entries you sent me to look at/information for ten no hate made.

[1] https://ameblo.jp/aisharyoko/entry-12651478782.html - this is a blog and likely doesn't meet the criteria for reliability. while it mostly functions as a review, it does contain some insight that i think is available to source from the hardback editions i found last week, hopefully i'll get round to reading it soon.
[2] https://honkuimusi.hatenablog.com/entry/2022/09/22/080000 - this is also a personal blog and doesn't contain anything specific or sourced to draw from.
[3] https://booklive.jp/product/index/title_id/215654/vol_no/001 - this is a shop link the only thing it may be sourced for is verifying a reprinting that took place on 23 august 2013.
[4] https://renta.papy.co.jp/renta/sc/frm/item/39527/ - this is also a shop link.
[5] https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/13255241 - not sure what the policy is for goodreads, but this verifies that an original hardback collection was released in 1993 (isbn-9784022607485) (asin-4022607483)
[6] http://blog.happyblossom.boo.jp - is a blog that's unrelated to the manga.
[7] https://booklog.jp/item/1/4022607483 - similar to goodreads, it's a japanese book blogging website, also confirms the release date of the hardback.
i saw that manga: an anthology of global perspectives, edited by toni johnson-woods mentions the series a couple of times. not sure there's much information though.

Question before AfD

Hi. It seems like you're well experienced when it comes to Afd and notability guidelines. Do you think this article Rebecca Chambers is notable? I feel like [2] is the only sigcov, while this one [3] just only stated that the creator hates her. Thanks! 🍕BP!🍕 (🔔) 02:02, 27 January 2025 (UTC)

@Boneless Pizza! Thanks for asking. I am indeed interested in the notability of fictional characters, and I agree many are poorly done; that said, I am also upset when I see longer articles deleted or redirected without even a merger. I agree with your assessment of these two sources; one could argue that second SIGCOV source is provided by https://www.thegamer.com/resident-evil-zero-rebecca-chambers-facts-trivia-didnt-know/ but it is also written in the crappy listicle format, so yeah, this is pretty borderline (no other source in the article mentions her by name). This is a valid topic to bring to AfD, yes, although my vote there would certainly be along the lines 'whatever happens - it is borderline - please merge content (reception) rather than delete. PS. I restored this since I already spend 5m+ looking into this and writing a response. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 02:12, 27 January 2025 (UTC)

Lo siento

I got a fair bit more agitated with you on that particular "Features of" afd (part of your bundle), and while I totally disagree with your idea of how to nuke it all out of memory and what I perceive as you not perfectly upholding the value of commenting on "content, not contributors", I went to some places I shouldn't've gone to, and for this I apologise. Consider my endorsements of other editors telling you to "get off your high horse" and one-off "if this guy keeps going, we'll take it to ANI", all, um, promptly nullified.

I honestly believe that in an ideal world, there should be a long-term draft for rehab for the content, and it's a hell of a thought to consider the terms hyperlinked through the dozens of MU, MCU and Spider-Man articles that would turn redlinked. I guess it's not bad once you think about red links with possibilities. Other editors seem to think that there should be a "glorious cultural revolution of the content" that frankly, I disbelieve will ever come to be. Leaving it be will cause it to sit there, as rehab-ing the sum total of the pages would amount to a climb up Everest, Mount McKinley, and Kilimanjaro, respectively. Ain't nobody doing that.

Whatever I said, I didn't need to. I offer my heartfelt regrets at having stooped. Wherever you may be, I wish you a good one. BarntToust 04:38, 15 February 2025 (UTC)

I posit that at least the MCU wikiproject could start out with like a goal to transform one or two sub-section(s) on their "Features of" article a week, but hey, I might work on a pitch later about that. Would you be down to discuss somewhere about like, coming up with one of these for the comic WikiProject to reform the Marvel Universe and Spider-Man FO lists? Obviously I'm not asking you to do any heavy lifting of the pen or anything, I'd just like your thoughts and maybe an endorsement of a plan—doesn't even have to be any of what I'm writing here—so that meaningful reform happens. BarntToust 04:46, 15 February 2025 (UTC)
@BarntToust Well. *silence* I did not expect that. Thank you. In my experience (I've been here a bit longer than you) the way we started our interaction generally ends up... nowhere good, to say the least. I am very happy to find this is an exception. As for the subject in question, I fully support rewriting such stuff. It can be done, I've done it myself on a number of occasions (hmmm, for example, hyperspace here is the old version, I recommend comparing them...). But in my experience such content generally needs to be torn down to nothing, nuked (per WP:TNT), then restarted from scratch. Here, I think the topic of Marvel Universe is obviously notable. I'd direct efforts to fix stuff there. I still feel that Features of... is irredeemably plot summary that does not belong here (per WP:TVTROPES). That said, it's clear consensus for now is to keep this stuff. So be it - we will see over the next few years if it can be fixed, or if consensus changes. Btw, if you are interested in notability (and rescue of) fictional topics, I recommend watchlisting the following pages: Fictional elements, Science fiction and fantasy, Comics and animation, and Lists. And by all means, good luck with rewriting/rescuing related topics. I love fiction, I just believe we need to upheld certain standards of quality on Wikipedia (simply put, good encyclopedic articles go beyond plot summaries and/or lists of media appearances of a fictional entity - that's what differentiates us from wikia/fandom type of fansites). Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 10:13, 15 February 2025 (UTC)
Even better example than hypespace is what we (mostly TompaDompa) is doing with Template:Astronomical locations in fiction. Check the history of a number of entries there. Point is, content can be fixed. It just takes time, since there are very few of us doing the "heavy lifting", and there are zillions of articles to fix (not to mention, write up from scratch). Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 10:18, 15 February 2025 (UTC)
Whoa! Thanks for your directory to all of these very insightful revisions, and for your recommendations on versing myself on content rescue. I may take some remedial action eventually based on your reccos. BarntToust 16:36, 15 February 2025 (UTC)

Your WikiCup submissions: three DYKs

Hi Piotrus, thanks for participating in the WikiCup. You recently submitted the following for DYK points:

Unfortunately, none of these are eligible for DYK points because they were all nominated to DYK as newly promoted GAs. I know this can be disappointing, but Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring#Did you know? states that only newly created or expanded DYKs are eligible for DYK points. The rules specifically exclude DYK submissions from receiving points if their appearance on DYK is solely because the article was a newly promoted GA. Epicgenius (talk) 23:46, 15 February 2025 (UTC)

Help with sources for Polish history article

Hi Piotrus, sorry to bother you again, but do you know of any books that cover the death of Grzegorz Przemyk (this is for Grzegorz Przemyk) other than "Żeby nie było śladów. @Grumpylawnchair Book, no - pl wiki mentions only this one (it has a dedicated if short article: pl:Żeby nie było śladów). I presume you saw this? WikiCup 2025 March newsletter

The first round of the 2025 WikiCup ended on 26 February. As a reminder, we are no longer disqualifying the lowest-scoring contestants; everyone who competed in round 1 will advance to round 2 unless they have withdrawn or been banned from Wikipedia. Instead, the contestants with the highest round-point totals now receive tournament points at the end of each round. Unlike the round points in the main WikiCup table, which are reset at the end of each round, tournament points are carried over between rounds and can only be earned if a competitor is among the top 16 round-point scorers. This table shows all competitors who have received tournament points so far.

Round 1 was very competitive compared with previous years; two contestants scored more than 1,000 round points, and the top 16 contestants all scored more than 500 round points. The following competitors scored more than 800 round points:

The full scores for round 1 can be seen here. During this round, contestants have claimed 18 featured articles, 26 featured lists, 1 featured-topic article, 197 good articles, 38 good-topic articles and more than 100 Did You Know articles. In addition, competitors have worked on 23 In the News articles, and they have conducted nearly 550 reviews.

Remember that any content promoted after 26 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2, which begins on 1 March. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! Proposed deletion of WIEM Encyklopedia

The article WIEM Encyklopedia has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Unreferenced article, unable to find any coverage about this encyclopedia.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Question

Hi. Having just run into you at a DYK, and then looked at your user page, I was curious what your thoughts might be about a couple of issues. 1, as you are a teacher, are you concerned that when student submit papers to you, it may be difficult to know if AI wrote it? 2, as you have edited wp a great deal, do you see somehow people using AI to create their entries on wikipedia? Just curious. 2603:7000:2101:AA00:B988:8BEF:5DBE:59F6 (talk) 04:11, 16 March 2025 (UTC)

  1. Yes - it is a common topic of discussion among teachers.
  2. I don't do recent changes/new pages patrol these days, so I don't see it, but I am sure it happens. I have seen it a a bit from my students, although not much as they primarily do translations; but last semester we had some incidents of AI hallucinations being added to Wikivoyage (which is part of my Fall teaching). I am sure there are many more examples around the Wiki, but generally, AI hallucinations can be easily spotted.
  3. I use it myself to polish the prose (at that level, AI is just a refined spellchecker...), craft DYK hooks, as well as article leads (of course, I proofread and fact check all AI output). All tools are good, if used responsibly.
  4. See in case you haven't: Wikipedia:Artificial intelligence

Polish assistance?

Hello Piotrus, looking through some old content of mine I found I wrote about A Wizard of Earthsea: "In 1984 it won the Złota Sepulka [pl] or the "Golden Sepulka" in Poland." The citations I had for this are poor, and I can't find better ones. Do you have insight into whether this is worth mentioning in an FA? If so, would you be willing to check for sourcing in Polish, just for that statement? Best, Vanamonde93 (talk) 00:18, 24 March 2025 (UTC)

@Vanamonde93 The award is notable, so I think it should be mentioned. A quick search (I am leaving home right now) yielded this seemingly RS: https://cejsh.icm.edu.pl/cejsh/element/bwmeta1.element.ojs-doi-10_24425_kn_2023_146546 , seems to be in English even, and could be useful for something else, perhaps? Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 01:03, 24 March 2025 (UTC)
Perfect, thanks! The book has so much published analysis that it might be difficult to work in elsewhere but I will have a look. Vanamonde93 (talk) 02:17, 24 March 2025 (UTC)
Interestingly, it does post-date my writing of the FA, which would explain why I couldn't find it then. Vanamonde93 (talk) 02:20, 24 March 2025 (UTC)
FYI the Sepulka award is pretty niche. I still lean towards the view that FA on a book should list all awards, but I could see how for some it could be close to trivia. So it's your call. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 11:31, 24 March 2025 (UTC)

Psychiatry Under the Influence

Hello! Funnily enough, I was tasked with finding a DOI for an article in one of my classes; which led me to your Psychiatry Under the Influence wiki page. To preface, I have never written or edited a wiki page so I don’t have the skill to edit a page properly. With this, I noticed that there is a small error within the citation referencing

Marecek, Jeanne (November 2016). "Robert Whitaker and Lisa Cosgrove, Psychiatry under the influence: Institutional corruption, social injury, and prescriptions for reform" [. Feminism & Psychology. 26 (4): 511-514. doi:10.1177/0959353516663966 . ISSN 0959-3535 C.

This error being, that the DOI links to a review of the source, not the actual source. And when I looked, it doesn’t appear that the referenced work has a DOI so it may cause some confusion. If you have a better solution than just removing it, feel free to let me know, as I am still learning about proper citation!

Thanks!

[ [User:Meowmiaoumeow|Meowmiaoumeow]] (talk) 16:17, 25 March 2025 (UTC)

@Meowmiaoumeow Perhaps I misunderstood your message, but I think this is as intended. As in, it was my intention to link to reviews of the book in question, because it is reviews (or other mentions of the topic - here, book - in independent sources) that can be used as a source. The book itself (which is the topic of the article) is a WP:PRIMARY source and it can be used at best to summarize contents. The article about a book has to be written from sources that talk about the book. See for example The Dark Domain which I am finishing right now, or non-fiction The Use and Abuse of History which I expanded recently.
Sidenotes:
  • I think your sig code is broken
  • funnily enough, I am a university lecturer who regularly assigns my students to edit Wikipedia. Kudos to you that you have done so by yourself (even if it is just to leave me a message about a potential error). I'd encourage you to try to edit Wiki yourself, it is fun for many of us here (like a video game... complete another article = get a unique achievement), and for me it certainly helped me develop professional skills in writing and collaboration that helped me become a professor :D Food for thought.
