Really cool episode.
Ling is badass against wrath and Scar's past was revealed.

I'm with Jacut. I liked the premise of the episode: reveal Scar and do something dramatic with Winry. As a result, I liked how they approached Scar's killing the Rockbells, and I loved Winry letting it all out (har har) at the end. BUT...I didn't like Scar's flashback at the whole (I almost felt like I liked the original's version better), and I hated almost everything that dealt with Winry the fact that she's still in Central after wasting time last week announcing she was leaving, that she thinks the made Hughes her dad even though she knew him for, what a week? Two? And then her randomly walking past the debris and dead soldiers to run into Scar, and then have her emo meltdown, gun in tow, was icing on the cake.

On the positive side though, I'm finally getting interested in Ling as a character, and Al is really showing strength now as opposed to docility. 3/5 from me.

Damn, you must be some insensitive snob. Hughes had that effect on Ed and Al too. You know why? They're all kids who lost their parents really early in their lives, and Hughes was always there to take care of them as family, especially Winry. Hur dur dur.

Ranting aside, Ling is one bad ass mother fucker.

Not to mention that Winry identifies herself with Elysia, Hughes death reopened the old wounds from back then when SHE lost her parents.

In her mind, during that moment, Scar represented not only the killer of her parents but the killer of Elysia's father too(even if that was not the case in reality)

Maybe it is insensitive, but it doesn't make sense to me. She made him her father in her head when they didn't really have much time (let alone screen time) together. Two weeks does not family make. It's fine if she identifies herself with Elysia and grieves for her, but for her to say, in a moment of clarity, "I guess I made him my dad in my head," is just plain ridiculous. It tried too hard to make a connection that was barely there.

Blame it on the quick pacing of the anime at the start of the show. It's like they had fire on there ass.

I really liked what they did in Scar's flashback scenes. Highlighting the blue eyes of the Amestrians. You see the Amestrian reactions to the red eyes of the Ishbalans. But I don't know if too many ppl thought about how the Ishbalans may have felt & been traumatized by the meer sight of an Amestrian. State Alchemist or not.

Everything else, pure WIN and fanservice. I love it when Ling gets serious.

The only thing I liked about this episode was the Ed/Winry moments at the end. He jumped in front of her to save her without any hestitation. Beautiful!

Everything else was horrible. I can't stand Scar so seeing his backstory was incredibly boring to me. I hated the fact it was all in black and white minus the blue eyes. They could have easily made it all color and exaggerated the blue eyes. It actually hurt my eyes watching when we went back to the present and got full color again. And I was watching in a well lit room.

Only a 3/5 - and that's because of Ed/Winry.

It was great. The flashback was awesome - emphasis on the blue eyes with everything else black and white was nice. It got emotional towards the end as well, seeing Winry cry was sad.. And Ling owns.

Ed&Winry moment was heartbreaking. And they kept the 'your hands aren't meant for killing' line :") I thought it was perfect, the way Winry burst out in tears, the episode ended, a second of silence, and then: 'Let it all out, let it all out...' ;__;

Ling's epic fight scene x3 This dude is FIFTEEN years old, holding a wounded girl on his back/arm, one-handedly fighting the most badass Homunculus ever (you know it's true), who just happens to be the fuhrer, and still manages to survive more than 5 seconds (which is a lot when Bradley gets serious), actually RUN and get a (unspoken, but still) compliment from Bradley himself. WHILE LECTURING HIM ON HOW TO BE A GOOD KING. And people have wondered why I like him.

Ling sure is good. Nice ep and emotions. I thought they weren't gonna show Gluttony getting cut up for some reason (it looks better in the anime?).

And did I heard Koyasu Takehito?

Ok First and foremost, I was expecting this epicode ro primaril concentrate on action, albeit there was some, which was really good as well, the Fuhrer bit was epic with Ling. There is definitely more to him than meets the eye, Haha his eyes ae always closed as well! XD The scar history bit was really good, good explanation as to how he got the tatoos, and very understandable considering the circumstances he was put in beforehand with the invasion, to why he killed Winrys' parents! Looking forward to the next episode, maybe it will be a bit more complex!

Trauma Scar was awesome ;) Part where we realizes his bro's arm was on his...

Winry! Forgive him! ><;

And yep! Scar bro = Takehito Koyasu! Yay for reading credits.

Great episode, Ling's fight with Wrath is Epic.

Very intensely portrayed and I loved the way they did the gunpoint scene with Winry. I think throwing in the Ishvhal flashback threw it off balance a little bit, but it ties/answers questions for some nicely I think.

That was artistic expression to perceive the enemy soldiers from ishvalan POV(considering the first thing amestrians see in ishvalans are red eyes) AND to draw parallels between this war and Hitler's campaign for "Aryan" race(ala, Blue eyes and blond hair)

Awesome episode.

Coincidences, yes, but I don't care. Loved seeing the standoff with Winry and the gun- still very intense. The flashback did dissipate the tension some, but I'm glad that they put that in there because

(spoiler for FMA manga vol. 15)

Brilliant artistic decision to show the Ishbal flashback in black and white, with the blond hair and the blue eyes of the Amestrians highlighted.

On further news, Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood is facing cancellation due to unrepresented cruelty to animals. Green Piece is planning a big protest and the UN are already evaluating the situation.
The director of the show Irie Yasuhiro claims that it was just a mistake. As he said in a live radio interview "We just didn't notice the cat was there".
An excuse that does not put in piece all the animal rights activists organizations. A member of the Japanese activist organization "ALIVE" even went as far as calling him the Antichrist and Brotherhood as the work of the devil.
The despicable event is shown in the pic below.

erm, don't you think that is overblown. yes i noticed the cat was there in the episode but it wasn't blown into smithereens when scar blew up the wall. Calling the series as antichrist is going a wee bit too far.

anyways, back to the epsiode, i'm kinda disappointed for i really, really wanted to see more of ling vs wrath fight (even though the part where ed jumped in front of winry was well done).

lol, remember what you were whining about last episode? that wasn't winry announcing she was leaving, that was ed asking winry to stay (doesn't seem random now, does it? remember, anime doesn't usually contain a lot of randomness - it's usually foreshadowing for something). and it wasn't a coincidence she saw scar because she was trying to find ed using the damage.

"I guess I made him my dad in my head" = RATIONALIZING. It means she was trying to figure out why she was so attached to Hughes, despite her not knowing him that long. It means she had already made a connection with him/them, it means it already happened, it was already there, for whatever reason (hence her rationalizing). You're assuming that she (rationally) decided to make him her dad, when she (emotionally) took him for her dad.

Also, two weeks/days/hours can definitely a family make - if people can fall in love at first sight, if people can come together/apart over a single incident, then two weeks is really a lot of time. Let's be realistic here now, shall we?

The ironic thing was - I didn't like Winry's scene at all (too forced, etc.). Actually, I didn't like parts of episode 20, 21, 17, etc. I had no chance to say it though, this post is long enough as it is.

Whining? No. I don't remember Ed asking Winry to stay last week. Unless you're talking about this week's episode, in which I would say that Winry should have already been gone, so it's just dumb.

I'm not going to go over the Hughes thing again, the fact is she's grasping at a connection that was barely there, and to jump first at "I guess I made him my dad in my head" is ludicrous. Like I said, if she were really rationalizing, identifying herself in Elysia is much more rational and understandable. She is trying to rationalize her thoughts using emotions pulled out of a hat.

Sorry. I don't believe in love at first sight. Family is a very strong word with deep connotations to me and most people. Some random man like Maes is not apart of Winry's family. That belittles her connection with Al, Ed, Pinako, her parents, and even her dog to say so.

So if you didn't like Winry's scene, and thought it was too forced, what were the things they were trying to force, besides the gravity of her mourning Hughes? I'm guessing you're talking only about the stuff with Scar, which was much more justified (though equally overblown)?

^^ my internet is wonky today.

In that scene (12:50), ed asked winry to stay because he'll probably break his arm again.

There's no reason in rationalizing, lol. to her the connection was there, nothing you can do about that. nothing you can do about her reasoning too, given it was honest to her. That's why you rationalize, because emotions aren't rational. just to let you know, most human actions aren't rational.

Not that her attachment isn't completely understandable. Hughes = dead; Elysia = alive. It's human nature to want what isn't there. If both of them died, she might have been attached to her.

Who cares if you believe in love at first sight? Or about your views about family. All I said that it happens, that to those people, it happens. And why should her caring belittle anything? Are people belittling their connection to their loved ones whenever they care about people in Iran/American troops/victims of disasters/etc.? It's the opposite - she cares about Hughes because she thinks of him as a father, because she loves her parents.

What I didn't like were how the opening scene wasn't foreshadowed, the placing of the gun - it made it seem too obvious what was gonna happen. I also didn't like how 'fast' she found them, and how fast she reacted to the revelation. At least develop how her reaction developed (from sadness to revenge). Have her look at the gun, or bump into it.

Along that note, lots of other things I didn't like:

Scar should be overmatched, but the brothers are actually struggling against him, even with Al improving and the two knowing Scar's powers. It's like Luffy struggling against Sanji (shouldn't happen).

Scar's brother didn't even put up a fight against the alchemist. This goes against how strong Scar is right now, and how his brother knows more alchemy and should be more powerful than him.

Scar is also too much of a dick here, and even if the Rockbell's deaths were understandable, it goes against his 'justice' theme. He should regret killing them (maybe in the future?)

The 'blue eyes' is a good device, but one that should have been used before - it should have been introduced when Scar was first shown, at least.

I don't know what to say. If you're rationalizing something, then there should be reason. Most human are generally rational, so I just don't buy that when Winry has a clear head, that she's saying that. It felt much more like a plant for the viewer to excuse Winry for her overblown meltdown minutes later than it did actual rationalization and introspection.

That I don't believe in love at first sight obviously means that I don't believe that people fall in love in that span of time. I don't deny their feelings because I know what they're trying to communicate: intense infatuation and mutual interest in a person. To me love is something that occurs naturally over time. It's too strong of a word to be used in this instance, and is she really thinks she feels this way, then it just paints Winry as highly naive, impressionable, and fickle when I look at her personality as a whole. No. people aren't belittling their connection to their loved ones whenever they care about other victms. The difference here is that Winry placed him on an unfounded, bizarre pedestal, equating the effects of said death to that of someone much closer than one you've know for upwards of 14 days. I say this based solely off of my personal experience: all deaths aren't equal like that, and if they are to her, she has severe psycho/emotional issues.

As for Scar being overmatched, I suppose so, but since Ed was never anywhere near a match, and this is Al's first time being proactive in a battle, I give it the benefit of the doubt.

Didn't Scar's brother say he was learning Eastern Alchemy? I don't think he mentioned learning the type of alchemy that the State uses, and since I didn't see him do anything really on that type of scale, I'm just assumed that the type of alchemy he learned wasn't readily useful. It's kind of like learning how to drive a car, and then still being quite hesitant once you actually put it into practice on the road with lots of other people.

Dick where? In the flashback or in the present? If you're talking about the flashback, then I agree. I figured he was someone much less capable of taking a life back then, but he seemed less worried then about what he was doing than he does now. But if you're talking about in the present, then I disagree. He was totally accepting that Winry should kill him. To me that says how much he has thought about that moment. But then he went and tried to blame it all on Winry and "her people" that I admittedly rolled my eyes a little bit. I don't know. Since Winry has found out about Scar, I just see his importance dwindling except to be a surprise roadblock every now and then. He'll probably get used in the same capacity as the first show.

I don't think it really should have been used before since it had no other place previously. It's mostly used with the red eyes of the Ishvalans to paint a "red versus blue," "us versus them" mentality. That's why I'm not so impressed by it because it's such a banal way to be "artistic." I still think the most successful "artsy" episode (and probably still the best overall episode of Brotherhood) is the first Scar v. Ed and Al.

Great fighting sequences and that final scene. :D The whole part with Ed telling Winry that her hands weren't meant to kill was incredibly touching. It just had a tenderness about it. It was awesome. :) But in some way I thought it could be better, but I can't quite put my finger on it. It felt lacking somehow. It had emotional punch, certainly, but still... hmmm.
